National Apprenticeship Week: Introducing Joakim
Meet Joakim Jersby, 19, an apprentice draughtsperson at Osbit. He explains why this forward-thinking company provides the perfect environment for apprentices to develop their careers…
When did you join Osbit?
I was thrilled when Osbit offered me my first real job, which I started in November 2022. I’d completed a BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Renewable & Subsea Engineering at Newcastle College and was looking for a job to give me more of a grounding in the industry. I applied through the TDR Training & Apprenticeships programme and I secured an interview with Osbit. It was my first ever job interview so I was a bit nervous! Fortunately I must have impressed them because I got the job! Having done a bit of research, I discovered that Osbit has a good track record in offshore renewables, which is a growing industry with lots of career opportunities. I couldn’t wait to get started.
What initially attracted you to an apprenticeship?
I didn’t really feel as though university was for me and the idea of learning on the job whilst gaining valuable industry experience was very appealing. I get a buzz out of solving practical problems and getting a close-up view of how a business is run.
How are you finding things so far?
I’m really enjoying it. The Osbit team have made me feel really welcome and I settled in very quickly. I’ve received great support but I’ve also been given the opportunity to express myself and put forward my own ideas.
The scope of the job is very wide-ranging, which is one of the main benefits of working here. Everything that Osbit produces is bespoke and each project is unique because it’s tailored to the needs of the client, so I’m learning new things every day. My role is to produce detailed computer aided design (CAD) drawings for bespoke pieces of equipment, and I’ve enjoyed plenty of rewarding moments. I recently produced CAD drawings of supports for upending hinges, which are used to install monopile foundations – that was a lot of fun!
How do you see your career developing?
I already feel I’ve made great strides in my time at Osbit. I’m doing an Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Engineering, which means I spend one day per week at TDR and the rest of the time at Osbit, learning on the job. I enjoy being a draughtsperson and doing the CAD drawings but eventually I’d like to branch out into design engineering. Completing the HNC will be the first step on that journey.
Why is Osbit a great place to work?
It’s really quite unique, a nice place to work. Although I’m young, they’ve still allowed me to take responsibility on projects so I feel I’m making a positive contribution. You get the chance to work independently but if you need help with anything, there’s always someone on hand to support you. They’re also keen on best practice in the workplace and have created a culture where everyone is encouraged to learn from each other.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about an apprenticeship?
Do it! There are lots of different types of apprenticeships to choose from and they can give you a good understanding of your subject area. Plenty of people have gone on to have successful careers after starting out as an apprentice so I’d definitely recommend it. It’s great to see companies like Osbit investing in apprenticeships as they can give you a helping hand up the career ladder.
